Middlesbrough made it 10 games without a win as Marvin Johnsons red card proved pivotal in a 2-2 29, after throwing off a 2-0 lead against Hull City.
Despite their recent woeful form, Jonathan Woodgates side were exceptional from the first half, taking a deserved two-goal direct thanks to some Marcus Tavernier attack (7) and a brilliant team goal finished off by Ashley Fletcher (26).
However, with the match in their hands, Johnson dropped his mind just before half time sliding on Eric Lichaj leaving the referee no choice but to brandish a card.
Hull took advantage of their extra man after the break along with Jared Bowen scored two quickfire goals (71 and 75) to silence the Riverside Stadium.
Woodgates team does proceed but only on goal difference.
